The assumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is at it again and pleading for help from the tech industry in order to combat global terrorism. In a recent speech in Cleveland Ohio Clinton said that, “as president I will work with our great tech companies from Silicon Valley to Boston to step up our game; we have to do a better job intercepting ISIS communications tracking and analyzing social media posts and mapping jihadists networks as well as promoting credible voices who can provide alternatives to radicalization.”
Tech companies in the Valley have already meet the US agencies in an attempt to discuss ways they can all assist the government in combating terrorism online. Facebook has gone ahead and voluntarily assembled a team which is focused on terrorism content on its site, and is thus helping promote “counter speech,” which are kind of posts that are aimed at the discretionary of terror groups like the so called Islamic State. Clinton on the other hand may have alluded to the efforts being done by Facebook that when she said that part of their proposal is to “promote credible voices who can provide alternatives to radicalization.”
Thus Clinton is proposing something that she will refer to as a kind of, ” intelligence surge,” where in, ” we already know we need more resources for this fight. The professionals who keep us safe would be the first to say we need better intelligence to discover and disrupt terrorist plots before they can be carried out.”
This all sounds well and good considering we are all still reeling from the recent attacks in Orlando Florida on a gay night club where 49 individuals were murdered by a person saying he was inspired by the Islamic State. However, when we take a step back and consider what this really means the outcome is much more frightening and leaves one worried for the future of security and national liberty on an Orwellian Scale. For instance, when they say we need to do a better job at stopping terrorism in this way, what they are really alluding to is the fact that they are going to be undergoing much more widespread data collection and information sorting by agencies such as the NSA and the CIA. What this means for the rest of us is that we are being asked to invite all of these agencies into our homes and look at our every move under the guise that it is a lesser evil than the ones at the hand of a terrorist organization. This is a red herring and if we are not careful we are going to see that the way we get out of it may be too late. There is an unprecedented capacity for information suppression and individual control that the world has never seen before. In so far as the chains of individual oppression are not seen as such, rather they are a part of our daily interactions and we choose to wear them. As we look upon our screens and get told what to say we have the ability to never come back out of this hole.
